Feel free to post your exercises here. I'm somewhat pressed for time at the moment, but I'll correct as many as I can. If you mail them to me directly, I'll post them without specifying the author.

This article taken from "Die Presse" of 2 September 2006, discusses the development of current labor disputes at the Brazilian VW subsidiary. Specifically it gives a historical overview of the developments leading to compulsory vacations of 11.000 employees in the Brazilian factory. First the author points out that the appreciation of the Brazilian Real led to a dramatic downturn in exports. Moreover the government did not grant a loan to VW, because the company had not informed the government about planned dismissals. Second the author mentions that as a result of declining export volumes VW do Brasil decided to make 6000 employees redundant by 2008. Third he draws the reader's attention to the fact that the planned lay-offs led to a strike of about 12000 employees. An additional aspect the article addresses are the possible consequences for VW in Germany. To sum up one can say that the article shows the reader that success depends closely on the company's ability and willingness to cooperate with the government.

"First", "Moreover", "To sum up" usw. immer ein Komma kommt.

This article, taken from "Die Presse" of 4 September 2006, discusses the legal consequences of discrimination against women in the workplace. Specifically it gives an overview of various lawsuits against companies with anti-women corporate cultures, especially in the financial sector. First the author points out that a female employee of the Deutsche Bank subsidiary in New York complained to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission about unequal treatment at work as well as unfair payment compared to male colleagues. Second he emphasizes that class action suits concerning discrimination have a long tradition in America. The large US retailer Walmart faced many lawsuits concerning unequal payment and career opportunities. An additional aspect the author addresses is the amount of money saved by unequal payment in the financial sector. To sum up one can say that the article shows the reader that unequal treatment of women in the workplace does not pay in the long-run.

Wieder ausgezeichnet zusammengefasst!

1)

The article to be summarized, was published in the daily newspaper „Die Presse“ on September 4th, 2006 and analyzes various aspects of the discrimination of female employees.

Most importantly, it provides an overview of different cases in which companies such as Deutsche Bank, Wal-Mart and DKW favour male over female employees in respect of salary and promotions for higher management jobs.

First the author points out that Deutsche Bank in NY is facing an lawsuit because a female employee complaint in 2005 about being treated unequally to male employees by means of getting less money for doing the same job as her male colleagues. Also, he explains a case where 1,6 million former Wal-Mart employees have joined a class-action lawsuit against their employer in 2001 based on an analysis which shows that in Wal-Mart less than 30% of all managers are female. Finally, he shows a recent sue in which six female employees of DKW bank complain on behalf of all female employees. Their lawyers claim up to 1,4 billion dollars.

An additional aspect the article addresses is that particularly the financial service providers are affected hardly as in this line of business the salaries are relatively high.

The central message of the article, therefore, is that even in the 21st century discrimination of female employees unfortunately is daily business.

Auch gut und detailliert zusammengefasst:

1)
"The article to be summarized, was published in the daily newspaper „Die Presse“ on September 4th, 2006": "The article to be summarized" ist zwar absolut gut, das Komma vor "was published" muss aber weg. Andere, ähnliche Einstiegsvarianten wären z.B. "The relevant article was published..." bzw. "The article in question was published..."

2)

3)
"... in 2005 about being treated unequally to male employees by means of getting less money for doing the same job as her male colleagues." The reason for this is that..." bzw. "This led to the consequence that..." einübt; dann kann einem eigentlich wenig passieren. Hier würde z.B. passen: ""... in 2005 about being treated unequally to male employees. The reason for this was that she received less money for doing the same job as her male colleagues."

4)

5)
"he shows a recent": Bei Textzusammenfassungen ist es sicherer, auf "shows" zu verzichten.

6)
"Their lawyers claim up to": Entweder "are claiming" oder "have claimed", weil es noch aktuell ist, aber nicht eine allgemeingültige Feststellung (Present Simple)

7) "An additional aspect the article addresses is that particularly the financial service providers are affected hardly ": Achtung: "Hardly" bedeutet "kaum", nicht "stark" ("strongly")

Pie Chart
This pie chart illustrates the proportion of consumer expenditures according to product categories. Most importantly, it shows that 32% of total expenditures are accounted for by housing, which represents an increase by 5% compared to the previous year. This is attributable to rising costs of heating and rent. Transportation costs amount to 18% of total expenditures, which can be traced back to the rocketing petrol prices. A further 9% of costs are attributable to personal insurance and pension. This high percentage is a result of the Austrians taking precautions for possible cuts in state pensions.
In conclusion, therefore, the pie chart shows a rather even breakdown of consumer expenditures according to product categories. For the reasons cited earlier, this breakdown implies that consumers should try to save money by reducing transportation and housing costs.

Graph
This graph displays the development of the market share of Hover Inc. on the European market between 1987 and 20, with the market share shown on the vertical axis and the years on the horizontal axis. As can be seen, the market share steadily rose by almost 7% from 1987 to 1990, where it peaked at nearly 31%. This is attributable to the general economic upswing and the lack of competition. In the following year there was a drop of 3% to 27% market share. This was a result of a defect of fabrication followed by a products recall on the German market. Even though the market share recovered and reached a peak at 29% in 1992, it steadily drifted to a mere 8% in 2002. This is a result of the growing competition on the saturated European market.
In conclusion, therefore, the graph shows a slightly turbulent negative development. For the reasons cited earlier, this development implies that management should enter new markets with high growth potential like the Eastern European countries.

This pie chart represents the proportion of share in production costs of the new Sony TW5000Z according to the cost centres. Most importantly, the chart shows that 29% of the costs were accounted for by the development of the TV-station. The reason for this is that new and revolutionary technology was invented to make the sharpest vision ever possible. In contrast to this, administrative tasks contributed only 5% of overall costs. Due to the integration of the product specific administrative department into the general administrative department, costs could be reduced by 3% compared to the previous year. Moreover, 21% of overall costs were attributable to design. This can be traced back to the fact that according to a marketing research design is the number two priority of customers, right after superior quality. In conclusion, therefore, the pie chart shows a rather even breakdown of share in costs according to cost centres. Is this summary too long?
This article analyses the effects of the cable car-accident in Kaprun on the Austrian compensation law. Specifically, it outlines the main events in context of the Austrian compensation law being criticised for not being casualties-friendly enough.
First, the author points out that there had been a meeting of 80 jurists from Austria, Germany and Great Britain in Innsbruck last weekend. The participants discussed which legal actions to take concerning damages after accidents with personal injuries like the one happened in Kaprun. There is a strong need for action due to the heavy pressure exerted on Austria by Ed Fagan, who is said to have already filed an action in New York in regards to Kaprun. Second, he maintains that the jurists fear that Austria’s legal system might develop according to the US-legal system. Already European lawyers try to find courts with favourable laws for their clients. Third, he draws the reader’s attention to the fact that the Austrian compensation law grants the families of casualties or the victims themselves only very little money for compensation, if something at all. On the contrary, Italian families who lost a member due to a cable car accident got a lot more damages for their loss, but German affiliates got even less in a similar case.
Aside from this main topic, the author also discusses the dispute about the minimum living time of an accident victim to entitle it to damages. In addition, he points out that verdicts reached in American can’t be executed in Austria.
The central message of the article, therefore, is that the Austrian compensation law is not endangered by the American law; nevertheless it needs to be changed to be more casualties-friendly.

Absolut perfekt! Tolle Arbeit.

2)
"that management should": In so einem Fall würde man das Management zuordnen (z.B. "our", "your", oder falls dritte Person, zumindest "the")

Toll geschrieben und begründet.

1)
"the proportion of share in production costs of the new Sony TW5000Z according to the cost centres": Das "according to the cost centres" macht das "of share in" unnötig/unpassend.

2)
"of the TV-station": Hier passt "the" nur, wenn der Leser eindeutig weiss, um welchen TV-Sender es sich handelt. Sonst muss man unbestimmt bleiben, d.h. "a tv-station"

3)
"according to a marketing research": "marketing research" immer ohne Artikel. Falls Du eine spezifische Studie betonen willst, nimm "to a market survey"

"on Austrian compensation law" aber "in the Austrian Civil Code").

"Already, European lawyers are trying...")

3)
"On the contrary,": Das heisst "Im Gegenteil", NICHT "Im Gegensatz dazu" (wäre "In contrast,")

Toll!

This graph shows the development of the share price of Andritz AG between August 2001 and August 2006, with the share price shown on the vertical axis and the years on the horizontal axis. As can be seen the share price amounted to 380 euros in August 2001. In the following year the share price plummeted to 220 euros. The reason for this all-time low is that a new strong competitor entered the market. Thereafter, the share price recovered slightly. This can be traced back to the fact that the board of directors appointed a new CEO with a first-rate reputation. In August 2005 the share price reached a peak and amounted to 450 euros. This is a result of the introduction of a new innovative product.

In conclusion, therefore, the graph shows a turbulent positive development. For the reasons specified earlier, this development suggests that investors should buy shares of Andritz AG.

This pie chart shows the proportion of Tea Company's sales according to region. Most importantly, the chart shows that 39% of sales were accounted for by Great Britain. The reason for this is that the demand for tea is very high in Great Britain. As can be seen, Africa made up 7% of sales. In 2005 Africa contributed only 1% to sales. This positive development can be traced back to the fact that Tea Company started a very successful advertising campaign in Africa in 2006. Moreover, the pie chart shows that the USA and Canada amounted to 19% of sales. This is a result of the new intensive distribution strategy in these countries, by which Tea Company sells its products through as many distribution channels as possible.

In conclusion, therefore, the pie chart shows a strong influence of the demand in Great Britain in regards to sales. For the reasons specified earlier, this breakdown suggests that Tea Company should invest more resources in regions like Great Britain and emerging markets like Africa.

German Article
Exporte boomen in China (www.derstandard.at 05. September 2006)

The articel in question, published on www.derstandard.at on 5 September, 2006 focuses on issues related to the balance of trade with Asia expecially with China. Specifically it gives an historically overview of the increasing import and export with China. First, the author points out that China is the forth largest supplier of goods like mobile phones, toys, cameras and shoes. Second, he shows that the commodity flow from China to Austria is three times larger than from Austria to China. Third, he maintains that China has a very aggressive pricing policy and as a result of this policy they will also increase their exports of cars. Aside from this main topic, the author also discusses the positive development of the trade balance with Australia. In summary, therefore, the article shows the reader that the Austrian export and import companies should focus more on China.

"The author emphasizes the double-digit growth of Chinese exports and China's increasingly dominant role in context of international trade.")

1)
"Third, he maintains that China has a very aggressive pricing policy and as a result of this policy they will also increase their exports of cars.": Achtung!

I have a couple of questions..
1. Why did you correct "steadily rose" but not "steadily drifted" in one of the postings? Is it only a special case with the verb rise?
2. Does it make a difference whether we use "were attributable" and "were accounted for by" or "are attributable" and "are accounted for by"? Is it ok to use both in one interpretation or should we stick to one tense (I suppose..)?
:D very helpful this thread, thanks a lot!

In his article in “Die Presse“ of September 14th, Michael Pichlmair illustrates the concept of “guerrilla advertising”. Specifically, he gives the reader examples from the mobile communication sector where two companies have already used this form of alternative advertising and points out some advantages and disadvantages in regards to its application in practice. The first example deals with tele.ring’s faked street demonstration by the “Speck” against the new tele.ring rate. But also the competitor mobilkom used a guerrilla campaign – also a staged street demonstration against the own new rate. On the one hand, those guerrilla campaigns have quite profitable advantages: they are cheap and attract attention easily. But on the other hand they are often confusing for the potential clients. Aside from this topic, the author also discusses the numerous law suits that are continuously filed in the mobile communication sector. Ultimately, the article shows that new and creative forms of advertising are effective by all means but it is important to be aware that they might be misinterpreted and that the initiator risks legal consequences.

The article taken from “Die Presse“ deals with progressive ideas concerning the remuneration of workers. Industry representatives as well as an advisor of the chancellor demand more flexible remuneration systems and bonus systems based on a company’s profit in order to motivate workers and employees. Their idea is that basic guidelines should be fixed during the collective bargaining rounds in every industry, while bonus systems should be decided on autonomously by the companies. The labor unions are against theses proposals because they fear a decrease in wages. The ideas will first be discussed during the wage round of the metal industry, starting on September 27th. The outcomes of these collective bargaining rounds are awaited anxiously because they might be able to describe the prevailing attitudes in many other industries. Therefore, it is important to await the results of the first of all bargaining rounds to draw further conclusions as far as the acceptance of the proposed remuneration system is concerned.
