Practicing Reporting Phrases March-April 2006
Exercise 1:

Choose various essay writing/presentation phrases we've worked through and use them in context of answering the following question:

What are the general services a commercial bank offers?

Remember: The focus of the exercise is not primarily content. Rather, the aim is to increase your level of comfort with various elegant writing phrases.

I will correct the phrases entered into the thread every evening and subsequently enter a new question.

Re: Practicing Reporting Phrases March-April 2006
The report focuses on general services which are offered by a commercial bank. First of all the author explains the theoretical fundaments of the most important functions which are accepting deposits and granting loans. These two functions are connected as the banks use the deposits to make loans. This is done in order to earn profits by claiming different interest rates.

Re: Practicing Reporting Phrases March-April 2006
To start with a commercial bank is a financial institution that offers different kinds of services. Firstly it accepts deposits from customers who want to earn interest. Secondly the commercial bank lends money to people, who need it for making investments. As these two functions are not enough for making good profit nowadays, it's necessary to fulfill other functions parallelly like different financial services. Finally I'd like to mention that the raising competition in that industry forces commercial banks to behave different than up to now.

This was very well written. My addition of "the" is more for style purposes than anything else (grammatically, no article would be fine).

To start with, a commercial bank is a financial institution that offers different kinds of services. Firstly, it accepts deposits from customers who want to earn interest. Secondly, the commercial bank lends money to people who need it for making investments. As these two functions are not enough for a bank to make a good profit nowadays, it's necessary to offer other services parallelly. Finally, I'd like to mention that the rising competition in the banking industry has forced commercial banks to behave differently than they have until now.

Two errors that are imporant to look out for are the following:

1) "lends money to people, who need it for making investments"

Placing commas in English is very difficult for native German speakers because the rules are often quite different. In German, if you're giving 'side-information' about a noun, then you place a comma (e.g. "...Kredite an Menschen gewähren, die sie benötigen um Investitionen zu tätigen.";)

In English, commas are only placed in a similar situation if the sentence continues after the 'side phrase' (e.g. "The bank lends money to people, who need it for making investments, and recollects it at the end of the loan period).

Otherwise, there is no comma ("lends money to people who need it for making investments.";)

2) "...it's necessary to offer other services parallelly, like different financial services"

Be careful about saying the same thing twice. This is true in any language, but particularly so in a foreign tongue because it usually leads to a sub-optimal language style. In the above case, it is necessary to specify what financial services you mean (because borrowing and lending are also financial services) or else to drop the phrase entirely ("...it's necessary to offer other services parallelly")

As I mentioned above, placing commas can be quite tricky in English if German is your native tongue. One area that you can develop fairly easily, though, is after intro phrases. Remember that phrases like the following should always be followed by commas:

In general, ...

Firstly,...

Second, ...

In the following, ...

Nonetheless, ...

Finally,

In the end,

In closing, ...

Additionally, ...

In addition, ...

Try actively adding commas after such phrases. Your writing will appear far more professional to a native speaker.

Re: Practicing Reporting Phrases March-April 2006
Before going abroad a company should consider at least two aspects, which contain demand and adaption of previous products. There are three levels of international involvement, but the report focuses on the different kinds of organizational structures. Firstly, there is the possibility of hiring an independent agent who represents an exporter in foreign markets. If a company seeks more substantial involvement, it could opt for licensing arrangements like franchising. Additionally, a firm could send its own managers to overseas branch offices which is advantageous as there is more visible public presence. Furthermore, a company could enter a strategic alliance. Potentially this term is better known as setting up a joint venture. Last but not least, there is the possibility to make foreign direct investments. A FDI (short term) is an arrangement in which a firm establishes or buys a company which is completely independent.

Re: Practicing Reporting Phrases March-April 2006
I know the following international structures as they are:
Firstly, there is the independent agent, where a foreign person or organization agrees to represent an exporter on the foreign market.
Secondly, I mention the licensing agreement where companies give foreign individuals or organizations the right to produce their products in another country. Franchising is the most popular form.
Thirdly, I know branch offices, which is a foreign office set up by an international company.
Fourthly, the strategic alliance better known as joint venture works as follows: A company finds a foreign partner to do business together in its country.. In some countries as they are China, Mexico .. you mustn’t to business without a local partner. Each of these partners has to invest money but they also share the profit.
Finally there is the so called foreign direct investment where companies buy tangible assets in the other country.

First of all, the author mentions that the commercial banks are one of the major types of financial institutions. The aim of these institutions is to ease the flow of money from sectors with surplus to those with deficits.
According to this text commercial banks are companies that accept deposits that they use to make loans and earn profits. In addition to this, the author tells us their liabilities, which includes checking and savings accounts.

The author of this text emphasises that you have to be aware of certain things before you go abroad. A company should only conduct international business, if the firm posses the necessary skills and knowledge to do business abroad. Furthermore they have to research, if there is international demand for the firm´s product. After considering these facts it is necessary to chose the best organizational structure for the company. The author mentions five different structures but to his mind ,using independet agents and maintaining branch office are the most effective ones. In order to lead a small business to international success you should use an independet agent. He/ She is a foreign individual that represents the firm in foreign markets. Besides the author underlines the very low risk of failure if you use this structure.
Instead of an independet agent, a firm may send its own manager to overseas branch offices. An advantage of this is that you have more direct control. Furthermore branch offices also furnish a more visible public presence in foreing countries.

How can we guarantee success in order to set up an organization abroad? The report deals with the international organizational structures a company has to sell its products abroad. First of all, the reader could use an independent agent. A big advantage of this would be to have a local partner who has business knowledge of the country. In addition the author would propose for the reader to use licensing arrangements. For example, Franchising or Patents. Thirdly, the reader might open maintaining branch offices abroad. Therefore, subsidiaries would be created abroad but the products would be homemade.

1) Before going abroad a company should consider at least two aspects, ...
"Punkte bedenken" übersetzt man besser als "consider X factors"

2)...should consider at least two factors, which contain demand and adaption of previous products.

3) Additionally, a firm could send its own managers to overseas branch offices which is advantageous as there is more visible public presence

"would be advantageous... would be more visible..."

Re: Practicing Reporting Phrases March-April 2006
Wichtig wäre bei einem Report, in der dritten Person zu schreiben (d.h. statt "I" lieber "The author", "He"/"She", "The report";) .Ich korrigiere zunächst in der ersten Person, dann in der dritten.

1st Person:
I will briefly explain the following international structures:
Firstly, there is the independent agent, who is a foreign person or organization that agrees to represent an exporter on the foreign market.
Secondly, I would like to mention the licensing agreement, where companies give foreign individuals or organizations the right to produce their products in another country. Franchising is the most popular form of licensing agreement.
Thirdly, there are branch offices, which are foreign offices set up by international companies.
Fourthly, the strategic alliance, which is better known as a joint venture, works as follows: A company finds a foreign partner with which to do business in its country. Each of these partners has to invest money but they also share the profit. In some countries such as China and Mexico , you shouldn’t do business without a local partner.
Finally, there is the so called foreign direct investment where companies buy tangible assets in the other country.

2nd Person:
The report will briefly explain the following international structures:
Firstly, there is the independent agent, who is a foreign person or organization that agrees to represent an exporter on the foreign market.
Secondly, it is important to mention the licensing agreement, where companies give foreign individuals or organizations the right to produce their products in another country. Franchising is the most popular form of licensing agreement.
Thirdly, there are branch offices, which are foreign offices set up by international companies.
Fourthly, the strategic alliance, which is better known as a joint venture, works as follows: A company finds a foreign partner with which to do business in its country. 1) Auch im First Person ("I";) nicht die Phrase "I know.." als Übersetzung für "es gibt" verwenden. Auf Englisch wäre das immer "there are", "I would like to mention/discuss" u.ä.

2)" branch offices, which is a foreign office set up by an international company."

3) "In some countries as they are China, Mexico "
Hier wäre die Verbindung immer "such as". Ausserdem unterteilt man erst ab 3 Aufzählungen mit Kommas.

1) "commercial banks are one of the major types of financial institutions"
"A commercial bank is one of the major types..." wäre ok, wenn Du aber den Plural willst, dann benutze in diesem Zusammenhang "are among"

2) "According to this text"
According to Griffin/Ebert" ansetzen.

3) "the author tells us their liabilities"
"Liabilities";) , dann folgt dem "tells us" meistens "about"

Very elegantly written.
1)"Furthermore they have to research, if there is international demand for the firm´s product."
a) Wenn Du im Singular startest ("the company";) , musst Du auch im Singular bleiben (d.h. "it has";)
"to conduct research whether X";)

Grundsätzlich sehr flüssig geschrieben.1) "the author means that "
The author feels that..." bzw. "The author argues that..." bzw. "The author is of the opinion that..."
The author states that..." passend.

2) "For example, currency exchange, banker's acceptances and letters of credit."
Vorsicht mit "for example". Die Lösung wäre "Examples of these are..."

Wieder gut geschrieben.

1) "First of all, the reader could use an"

2)"For example, franchising or patents."

3)"Therefore, subsidiaries would be created "
Achtung mit "Therefore"! "In order to do this,...") am besten passen.

2)"At this organizational structure "
Formulierunge wie "Im Rahmen dieser..." übersetzt man am besten mit "In context of..."

3)" an other"
Achtung, meistens meint man damit "another", d.h. ein Wort.
