A Basic History
The year is 1991 and nothing's quite as it should be in the Wizarding world, although to understand why you must first know more of the past.
It was October of 1981 and the Fidelius Charm was to be cast any day on James, Lily, and their son.
Sirius Black had been growing nervous of a spy in their midst for some time and was suspecting it may be his friend Remus Lupin, for Peter had not the imagination to be a spy. The man was worried that, knowing that he was secret keeper for the Potter's, Voldermort would come after him and force him to betray his friends. He had doubted his own strengths. Unsure and needing guidance, he chose to tell James his thoughts and feelings on the matter. Between them, the Potter's and Sirius decided that a different person should be used that Black didn’t know of. James and Lily asked McGonagall to become their Secret Keeper.
The Dark Lord never fell when he tried to kill the Potter's young son, as he never found out where they were and never attempted to destroy the family. So it has come about that the Dark Lord has grown stronger over the last 15 years and has become more formidable than could have ever been imagined. With an army of Death Eaters and many loyal followers yet to join their legions, You-Know-Who has reeked havoc across the Wizarding world and forced those of Muggle decent into hiding.
In the Wizarding world there is now in a constant state of war and many places that were once filled with witches and wizards alike have become derelict or corrupt--Diagon Alley among them. Once the place to go for odd supplies here and there has become one of the most dangerous magical parts of Europe. Only Aurors are allowed to venture there as it is crawling with Death Eaters and worse creatures.
So far, the war has not broken out into the Muggle world, although they know that something is amiss. A lot of the people fighting against the dark side fear there is soon to be an open attack on the Muggles because rumors have been circulating for months and have been growing more and more detailed.
The only real symbol of hope is the Muggle Movement (The MGM) an organization set up to help protect Muggleborns and Muggles alike.
Other than the MGM Hideaways and Retreats the only other places that seem to be safe are the schools dedicated to teaching magic, though only a handful are genuinely safe for Muggleborns to enter. Hogwarts, top of the list. Durmstrang is dedicated entirely to the teaching and raising of Future Death Eaters and Beauxbatons was closed after an invasion and attack on many students in 1989.
Dumbledore is still the Headmaster of Hogwarts but Minerva McGonagall stepped down as the Transfiguration professor in order to help with MGM
