The article „Das Bretton-Wood System“ published by Wikipedia explaines why this system dealing with currencies was introduced back then in 1944 and how it developed until its break down in the early 70’s. On July 22nd, 1944 in Bretton Woods, 44 states agreed on a currency system which goal it was to get rid of international trade barriers and to establish fixed exchange rates. Core of the system was the commitment of the U.S. Federal Bank to exchange Dollars for gold at any time. On the other hand, all other countries agreed on fixed exchange rates for the dollar. This system was assymetrical which means that the United States of America were able to act autonoumesly. In contrast, all the other members had to secure their Dollar exchange rates by international currency market interventions. In case of an unbalanced situation in the system the “Internationale Währungsfond” (IWF) or the “World Bank” were able interfere. After indirectly financing the Vietnam War through other member states by printing dollars, the market got flooded with US money. The fixed dollar exchange rate was corrupted and thus 1969 France wanted to exchange its Dollar reserves for Gold. The USA were not able to do so and therefore 1971 President Nixon ended the commitment to exchange gold for dollars. This led to the break down of the Bretton-Wood System in 1973 while the “Internationale Währungsfonds” and the World Bank are still important international institutions.

This pie chart illustrates a breakdown of the forecasted expenses of Cycamp for 2005. Most importantly, the chart shows that 41 % of the expenses were accounted for by payrolls and benefits. The reason for this is that Cycamp employs seven people who receive a quite reasonable salary. Furthermore, Cycamp will spend about 22 % of the budget for printing which will include the production of brochures as well as advertisements in special interest magazine. 12 % of the budget will be attributable to traveling expenses and tradeshows, whereas, another 11 % are accounted for administration. Web Hosting will need 7 % of the budget and 4 % will be spend for professional services. Staff education will contribute 11 % of the budget.
In conclusion, therefore, the pie chart shows the proportion of the different budget items which are quite similar to last year’s budget allocation.

This graph illustrates the development of the AUA share between June 29, 2006 and September 29, 2006, with the share price shown on the vertical axis and the time span on the horizontal axis. As can be seen, in July the share price plummeted from € 7,40 to € 6,20. The reason for this was the major losses of the airline. At beginning of August the share price slightly increased and then declined again. This development was due to the fact that there still was no prospective buyer found for the airline in deficit. At end of September the AUA share price rocket to € 7,27, which is the par value of the share. The share price rose by over 4 %. This increase can be tracked back to banks who invested in AUA, which were trying to support the trade of AUA shares. Another aspect is that Air France is quite interested in AUA and maybe these two airlines will form an alliance in the near future. For the reasons cited earlier, this development suggests that investor should hold their AUA shares as the alliance of Air France and AUA seems very promising.

The article published in “Die Presse“ from Sept. 9, 2006, addresses the main issues concerning discrimination in the workplace in the US. Specifically it discusses different lawsuits of discrimination of women, who are getting lower money and have fewer changes of being promoted than male colleagues.

First the author points out a lawsuit concerning a subsidiary of “Deutsche Bank” in New York, where a woman sues because of being discriminated. He points the reader’s attention to the fact, that the woman receives lower salary and that she has fewer changes of being promoted than male employees of that company. Secondly the author describes a case against Wal-Mart, where 1.6 millions female employees sue because auf discrimination. In particular he shows the reasons for that case, which are again lower salaries and fewer changes of promotion for female employees. Finally the author emphasizes that companies in the financial sector have to deal with such discrimination in the majority of cases.

In summary, therefore, the articles shows the reader, that discrimination against women in the workplace is still a big problem for many companies in the US, which may lead to expensive lawsuits and negative publicity.
