The article discusses the development of the world wide beer market. Specifically it outlines the development of the changes on the world market in reaction to the declining use of hop in beers. First the author points out that on average less than 5 gram of hop is used to produce a bottle of beer. In contrast to that 35 years ago more than 9 gram were necessary. This effects the taste of the beer which becomes milder if you use less of the hop. Second he maintains that this is a effect of the increasing beer markets in Asia, where milder beer is preferred. Third, he draws the readers attention to the fact that beer markets in Middle Europe are declining on the long run. Fourth he emphasizes that there will be two main strategies for the beer brewers in future: to serve the world market with global brands and a milder taste or to become a specialist and focus on specialities. Aside from the main topic the author also discussed that the development in Europe will continue despite big sport events as the football world championships in Germany. In summary, therefore, the article shows the reader that global beer brands needs Asian Markets to grow and furthermore that there will be still a chance for niche products because of the rather mild taste of global brands. Ultimately therefore, the author points out that global players such as SAB Miller, Anheuser Bush or Heineken will follow this mainstream production.

Gute Arbeit!
1) "of the world wide beer market" ist grammatikalisch völlig richtig.
2) "In contrast to that": Passt auch hier richtig.
3) "the author also discussed that the": Zwei Dinge: erstens musst Du im Present Tense bleiben (den Du ja vorher auch verwendet hast, d.h. Kontinuität) und zweitens passt "discuss" nie, wenn darauf "that" folgt.

The article addresses the current situation of part-time-workers in Austria. In particular, it highlights the most important results of a survey concerning this topic which was commissioned by the labour chamber. First the author draws the reader’s attention to the fact that 27 % of all part-time-workers have resigned and that’s the reason why they do not want to more hours. Second he states that 29 % of part-time workers are willing to work more for a short period of time and 13 % would consider working more hours if appropriate possibilities for child care would exist. Aside from the results of the survey, the article is also concerned with the requirements of the labour chamber addressed to the government which are better training opportunities and the appropriate pay of long-hours in the case of part-time-workers.
The central message of the article, therefore, is that the situation of part-time-workers should be improved by the government.

"article deals with", "focuses on", "highlights" usw.

In his article in “Die Presse“ of September 14th, Michael Pichlmair illustrates the concept of “guerrilla advertising”. Specifically, he gives the reader examples from the mobile communication sector where two companies have already used this form of alternative advertising and points out some advantages and disadvantages in regards to its application in practice. The first example deals with tele.ring’s faked street demonstration by the “Speck” against the new tele.ring rate. But also the competitor mobilkom used a guerrilla campaign – also a staged street demonstration against the own new rate. On the one hand, those guerrilla campaigns have quite profitable advantages: they are cheap and attract attention easily. But on the other hand they are often confusing for the potential clients. Aside from this topic, the author also discusses the numerous law suits that are continuously filed in the mobile communication sector. Ultimately, the article show that new and creative forms of advertising are effective by all means but it is important to be aware that they might be misinterpreted and that the initiator risks legal consequences.

The article taken from “Die Presse“ deals with progressive ideas concerning the remuneration of workers. Industry representatives as well as an advisor of the chancellor demand more flexible remuneration systems and bonus systems based on a company’s profit in order to motivate workers and employees. Their idea is that basic guidelines should be fixed during the collective bargaining rounds in every industry, while bonus systems should be decided on autonomously by the companies. The labor unions are against theses proposals because they fear a decrease in wages. The ideas will first be discussed during the wage round of the metal industry, starting on September 27th. The outcomes of these collective bargaining rounds are awaited anxiously because they might be able to describe the prevailing attitudes in many other industries. Therefore, it is important to await the results of the first of all bargaining rounds to draw further conclusions as far as the acceptance of the proposed remuneration system is concerned.

This article focuses on the main issues concerning the current discussion on implementing higher customs on imported Chinese or Vietnamese shoes by the EU Commission. Specifically, it points out the problems European shoe-manufacturers are facing in the competition with Chinese importers and why some EU member states will not be willing to agree to those punishing customs. First, the article states that the Chinese or Vietnamese producers have a lot of unfair competitive advantages as they are able to import at dumping prices resulting from the illegal state support they receive. Second, it discusses that Italy strongly agrees to the higher duties in order to protect its various self-production-lines. In contrary, North-European countries as well as Austria will probably reject the suggestion of higher customs as they have few self-production and additionally out-sourced a lot of their production to China. Finally, the text outlines the effects those punitive duty tariffs will have on customer prices. According to the article those customs will not have any impact as they will firstly only affect leather shoes and secondly will lead to a minimal increase per shoe which can be easily afforded by the manufacturer.
In summary, the reader comes to know that the EU Commission is not longer willing to show any acceptance of dumping prices and that they strongly focus forward on a positive decision despite the many problems the EU faces in context with this topic.

This graph illustrates the development of the share price of OMV AG throughout a time period of seven months from March to September 2002, with the share price in euros shown on the vertical axis and the time shown on the horizontal axis. As can be seen, after a rather constant development from March to May 2002 the share price rocketed and peaked at € 88,- at the beginning of June. This peak can be traced back to the fact of the corporate social responsibility activities in some third-world-countries the OMV started to promote in May 2002. After there was a drop of € 10,- in June due to the fact of a negative change in management, the share price continued to plunge and bottomed out at € 55,- in August 2002. This trough is attributable to the revealing of the scandal that happened in the Lebanon about 5 years ago, where the OMV bribed the local government. After some public relations activities to overcome this crisis, the share price climbed up a bit, but could not reach its original height. In conclusion, therefore, the graph shows a turbulent negative development. For these reasons cited earlier, the development implements, that investors should maintain observing the further development for a while before they decide to reinvest in the OMV AG.

This pie charts displays the proportion of Busweiser’s sales according to the market sectors it is operating in. As the chart shows the American brewery earns its greatest sales of 48 % in North America. This is due to the fact that the company started its business in this market and could since then establish a high recognition and image. In contrast, only 15 % is accounted for by the European market, although it is the market with the second highest potential. The reasons for that are the high competition in Europe and the fact that the European bear culture is highly developed and the Europeans therefore prefer to drink their own bear. In conclusion, this pie chart shows that Budweiser concentrates on its businesses in North America and seems to be rather successful there. For those reasons cited earlier, this breakdown implies that Budweiser should continue to concentrate on the North American market and not run the risk to lose its core business and its core income source by losing its focus.
Line graph - crude oil price [May-Sept]
This graph illustrates the price development of a barrel of crude oil throughout the period of the last 5 months.
From the beginning of May to the middle of June 2006 prices were decreasing by 5 USD per barrel to reach a three-month-low of 65 USD. OPEC's decision to increase production quota can be regarded as the main reason for this relief on the international markets. However, due to Iran's threats to proceed with researching on nuclear technology and the subsequently planned counteractions by the United States and the UN crude index reached an all-time high of 78 USD per barrel at the beginning of August. As both parties finally agreed on returning to negotiations crude price was formidable plummeting within 30 days to remain at a level of 60 USD.
Concerning this development two main conclusions can be drawn. Firstly, households that have not bought heating oil for winter yet should make profit out of the current situation. Secondly, the graph indicates that the price index for crude is extremely volatile at the moment and therefore organisational buyers like airlines should continue to consider futures as necessary finanical instrument to limit expenditures for cerosene.
This pie chart represents the spendings of an average Austrian household on various goods and services in proportion to the overall expenditures per houseshold in 2005.
23% of the spendings were accounted for by living costs, including heating as well as energy. This relativly high share could be explained by the considerable prices on oil, gas and electricity. Expenditures for transportation state the second largest position in an average Austrian family's budget. 18% of the household's income are needed for paying railway fares, petrol and car maintenance. Although more than four tenth of the budget are needed to cover the two mentioned groups of spendings the expenditures on education and recovering made up 13% in 2005. This figure confirms that gaining knowledge is regarded as an important part in the average Austrian's life.
This situation indicates that a household is confronted with the situation that a considerable part of its income is used for basic needs as running a flat and getting to work. Therfore, only a minor part is available for spendings in other lines of business like clothing stores.

Re: I have a couple of questions..1. Why did you correct "steadily rose" but not "steadily drifted" in one of the postings? Is it only a special case with the verb rise?
2. Does it make a difference whether we use "were attributable" and "were accounted for by" or "are attributable" and "are accounted for by"? Is it ok to use both in one interpretation or should we stick to one tense (I suppose..)?
very helpful this thread, thanks a lot!
1. You're right, I should have corrected "steadily rose", too (just edited that).
2) There's situations where you can go back and forth, but to be safe, I'd recommend sticking to one tense (and make sure to add a "to" after "attributable"!)

3) "First, the article stresses out": Kein "out" (bedeutet sonst "Der Artikel stresst sich")

2) "Overall, the toy car sales figures show a turbulent, but slightly positive development since August 2001." "have shown" statt "show" Bearbeitet von: GerhardFenkart am: 9/25/06 9:01

1) "This peak can be traced back to the fact of the corporate social responsibility activities": Bei "to the fact" müsste "that" folgen und danach in der Restphrase ein aktives Zeitwort. Bei Konzepten nimmt man einfach "traced back to" + Hauptwort.
2) "third-world-countries": ACHTUNG! Nimm immer "developing countries".

This article, taken from “Die Presse“ of 4 September 2006, discusses the legal consequences of discrimination against women in workplace. Specifically, it highlights the increasing number of class-actions lawsuit due to discrimination of women in US, especially in the financial sector. First, the author points out the complaint of a female employee to the EEOC against her employer, a German subsidiary of the Deutsche Bank in US. She claims that the bank’s sexist attitude towards women hampered her carrier opportunities. Furthermore, the author emphasises the class-action lawsuit against Wal-Mart where female employees were extremely disadvantaged in gaining an high salary or a management role compared to their male colleagues. Asides from this, the author also discusses the class-action lawsuit against another well-known German bank. Six women filed a class-action lawsuit and asked for damages in the amount of 1.4 billion dollars. The central message of the article , therefore, is that discrimination of women will not pay off in the long-run and companies should change old-fashioned management styles.

Ganz toller Stil!
"the USA", "the United Arab Emirates", "the Lebanon") gibt es aber Ausnahmen.

This graph represents the development of the price of Siemens AG shares on the New York Stock Exchange between August 2001 and August 2006. The share price in currency EUR is shown on the vertical axis and the time period starting with August 2001 and ending up with August 2006 on the horizontal axis.
The graph shows that in August 2001 the share price amounted to 380 EUR. Due to a X-Mas business in the telecommunication sector which was far below the expectations, compared to the previous years, the share price decreased to 350 by the end of 2001. This can be traced back to the fact that one competitor launched a new telecommunication set with more technical features to a cheaper price than Siemens was offering their telecom set. In the following months the share price climbed back to 400 EUR. The reason for that was that Siemens presented good quarterly figures for the development of their Order Intake as well as for their Revenue which strengthen the trust of international investors and fond managers to buy Siemens shares. Beginning of 2002, Siemens decided to take over VA TECH group. As this was a hostile takeover it took Siemens a lot of money and time to operationally integrate the business segments of VA TECH which were mainly overlapping with their own segments. As a result of being more tied up with internal and organisational issues the competitors of Siemens took the chance on the market an were able to win a lot of important projects in the field of high voltage turnkey substations. The effect on the share price was that it plummets to an all-time low of 230 EUR in March 2003. After a consolidation phase till August 2004 in which the share price was remaining stable at an amount of 270 EUR Siemens introduced new product lines in those segments that were overlapping with them of the VA TECH group to communicate an image of “United Power” on the respective markets. This marketing strategy turned out to be a boost for the Order Intake figures as well as for the market share. As a result of these activities the share price developed positively to an all-time high of 450 EUR in June 2006. Many investors took benefit by selling their shares with a good revenue at this all-time high level which was the reason for a slightly fall of the share price to 420 EUR in August 2006.
In conclusion, therefore, the graph shows a steady positive development after a very turbulent phase in 2002 and 2003 caused by the take over of VA TECH group. This steady development implies that investors should spend their money to buy Siemens shares if they are looking for a non-voluntary investment.

2) "take over VA TECH group": Firmenbezeichnungen grundsätzlich ohne Artikel.
3) "As a result of being more tied up with internal and organisational issues, the competitors of Siemens took the chance on": Muss man von der Struktur her ändern, da das eigentlich bedeutet, dass die Mitbewerber sich mit internen Angelegenheiten herumschlagen mussten. 4) "Siemens introduced new product lines in those segments that were overlapping with them of the VA": Du erzählst etwas abgeschlossenes, d.h. Past Simple
5) "non-voluntary investment"???
